Birds of prey

Red Kite

The Red Kite is quite a common bird in our area these days. They can be often seen on bright days soaring around looking for food. I have tried many times to get half decent photos of them but most of the time they are either too far away or I mess up the exposure on them. I either end up with a totally blown out, over exposed image or a black dot in the middle of the frame.

On this occasion however I got lucky,  the bird appeared over the carpark at work and I had the camera in the car. The shots below were taken at 400mm, one stop over on the exposure compensation, 1/400 shutter, F8 and iso 400

Rutland Osprey's

Rutland water is only just up the road and I am a regular visitor although I have only ever managed to see the Ospreys once. They are a long way away and my Canon 6d and trusty 400mm lens really were put to the test.

The Common Buzzard

Sometimes disregarded as "just a Buzzard" these are beautiful creatures that can often be seen soaring high in the sky on a bright cloudless day. I regularly see them around but don't often get the chance to grab a shot or two of them. The image on the left  was taken in fairly low light. I saw the bird fly into the woods and then spent a few minutes trying to get close enough for a reasonable shot.

The other images were taken at long range while walking along the river looking for Kingfishers.
